The 16th APEC-Tsukuba International Conference and ICDME-Tsukuba Conference 2023 Held

Center for Research on International Cooperation in Educational Development (CRICED) held the 16th APEC-Tsukuba International Conference (supported by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) on April 14, 2023.


Since 2006, this conference has been hosted by University of Tsukuba as part of the APEC Human Resource Development Working Group promoted jointly by CRICED and its partner university, Khon Kaen University of Thailand. This year's project theme is Online Workshops for Lesson Study 2.0: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Data Science for Education in APEC Economies, and this conference was the second Workshops, following the one held in Thailand on October 18 2022.


At the opening ceremony, Dr IKEDA Jun, Vice President for global affairs, celebrated 151 Years since Inception and the 50th Anniversary of the Establishment of our university noting that the university has been a leader in lesson study research since 1873, and that CRICED in particular has been developed lesson study worldwide through the APEC project. Ms. Nozomi Haraguchi, Assistant Director, International Affairs Division, Minister's Secretariat, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT), and Mr. Yuchi Zhao, Coordinator of Education Network, APEC Human Resource Development Division, addressed the significance of utilizing AI and Data Science in lesson study research. Dr SUZUKI Kenji, Director of the Center for Cybernics Research, and Dr ISODA Masami of the Institute of Human Sciences from University of Tsukuba contributed to the keynote session. Despite the Short Notice, the event was a great success, with 821 registered participants (excluding speakers and guests) from around the world and more than 1,300 YouTube views (as of April 17).


Following the APEC meeting, CRICED held the International Cooperation Development in Mathematics Education-Tsukuba Conference 2023 on April 14-15 under the auspices of JICA to promote international cooperation in mathematics education. Dr. Frederick Leung (University of Hong Kong), President of the International Commission on Mathematics Education, IMU, gave a keynote speech. The conference ended successfully with 1682 YouTube views (as of April 17) during the two days of the conference.
