The 9th Summer Research Program in Tsukuba 2018


Our annual summer event, The Summer Research Program in Tsukuba 2018 was held from July 23 to August 3 in collaboration between the Life and Environmental Sciences and Medical Sciences Departments. It was the 9th annual meeting. Fourth-two participants came from 10 different countries, including Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Germany, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia Taiwan, UK, and Vietnam. Five high school students also joined the program from Japan. All participants worked in a research laboratory of their choice and learned cutting-edge scientific skills and techniques for their research.


There were science seminars conducted by Professor Akira Shibuya (Faculty of Medicine), Assoc. Professor Andrew S. Utada (Faculty of Environmental Sciences), and Professor Chau-Ti Ting (National Taiwan University) in addition to Japanese cultural and language introduction done by Professor Masaki Ono (Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences). These provided opportunities to get to know the forefront of science, technology and Japanese culture. Students also have experiences of Tsukuba science tour (JAXA, AIST), and exchange with the University students on the weekend. Foreign students enjoy cooking Japanese food and wearing yukata. Each participant successfully completed the program by presenting their research accomplishment on the final day. Mr. Ching-Wei Liao from National Cheng Kung University received a most prestigious Young Scientist Award for his presentation. Best presentation awards were given to Assyifa Gita Firdaus from University of Indonesia, Dang Hoang Trang from Vietnam National University of Agriculture, Tzu-Yu Lin from National Cheng Kung University, respectively. Mario Armando Gomez Slazar from The University of Edinburgh and Latifatul Azizah from Bandung Institute of Technology received the Good Discussion Award.
